it’s not you, it’s me…

It’s completely reasonable for you to expect more updates.  I respect your feelings and will work harder at putting your needs ahead of my own…

The following are some collaborative paintings done with my buddy, Steve.  The photos are crappy, but the paintings almost make up for it.

ArtCon5 was awesome!

It took me a while for the update because, well, things take me a while…

The show was great fun.  This was my third year and they keep getting bigger and better each time.  We hear a lot these days about the poor economy blah blah blah…  But here is what I saw:  Many of Dallas’ most talented artists happily GIVING away their time and abilities to be part of something positive, powerful and a total blast.  There were also TONS…OK, there were no scales, but there were easily many many metric tons of people enjoying the event and reaching deep into their wallets for all the dope art.  I even saw a guy bidding up his own bids during the auction…yeah, paying more on purpose (it was the guy that bought the Christopher Walken portrait, which is fitting, because upping your own bids for charity makes you the coolest dude in the room…and you know, Walken is always the coolest dude in the room).

A very nice couple bought my painting.  I broke out of the mold for this one with a sexy waif with some antlers.  Here are some pics (thanks to Kristy and Trish!):

Just want to say much respect to the Art Con team/organizers, all the volunteers, all the artists, the bands and definitely to the people coming out to enjoy the event.

I’ve added the Art Conspiracy link in the upper right.  Check out their site and get on their mailing list.  They do a few events throughout the year, so they’re definitely good to be in touch with.

Some stencil work from this summer…

I did these months ago and I finally took some pictures of them.  The antlers one is already in a new home, and the tribal rabbit mask has a new home…as soon as i deliver it.  The two grackle paintings are available (let me know if you’re interested!)  They make me feel patriotic.  I hope, one day, there will be a birdman on the presidential ballot.

it’s a conspiracy!

ok.  i can’t say too much, but on December 12 we’re going to do that one thing again, like we did last year at that one place.  art, bands, space heaters.  the following video has been intercepted and decoded by our specialists.

Art of Skateboarding recap for those of you who like event recaps!!!

The show was a blast!  There were tons of awesomely decorated boards, tons of people bidding (hopefully) tons of dollars…

I had a great time and am grateful to have been a part of the evening.  I haven’t heard any money figures yet, but there was definitely a charitable atmosphere.  I didn’t get to meet the buyer of my board, but I saw that they shelled out a nice little wad of cabbage for it.

Much respect to the organizers and everybody involved.

You can check out pictures of the event here:

Can’t wait to do it again next year.

The Art of Skateboarding this Saturday!

artofskateboarding

It’s finally here!  And this year has twice the number of boards/artists, hopefully twice the attendees, and shooting for raising twice the amount of money for the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.  I hear there will even be a ramp for some actual boarding!

I’m seriously excited to be a part of this.  I got a chance to check out a lot of the boards at the drop off mixer and I was amazed at all the cool work.  I may have drop a few bids myself.

But you don’t have to take my word for it, here’s my homie Tom from the Nomads:

You can also scroll down and get a preview of my infamous “Panties+Antlers” board, but once again my shoddy photography means that you need to see it in person to get the full experience.

More catch up…

Or ketchup, or cat soup…or whatever you like with your fries.  This is another handful of older paintings.

This is the oldest…from probably about 6 or 7 years ago.  The subject is a cool kid I know, named Jevon.  He’s a lot older now, but, as you can see, this was when he was just growing some chompers.  Below are the photo and crummy sketch from which I started.  If I remember correctly, his mom said something like “You made him look like a monster!”  Oh the blindness of a parent’s love…

bubba

The rest of these are from the beloved and infamous Studio 2304 days…or daze…both apply.  I’m sure I’m getting these dates wrong, but we were there something like 2005 – 2008.  I say ‘we’.  It was actually Steve Herndon’s studio, but we both painted there many nights a week.  And it was pretty common for other friends/artists to drop by as well.  Anthony Mata, Brad Abrams and sometimes Laura Abrams all hung out and/or made art there.  If you dropped by, chances are you would be handed a brush and be coerced into doing something creative.

The serious gorilla.

The three below were done for Jet, Ryder and Greyson, my friend Heather’s kiddos.  Hopefully I’ll get them shipped to them in Colorado before they graduate high school.

And here is a painting I did for an ‘erotic’ art show.  At the time, I was painting a LOT of nude females, so I decided to try to capture eroticism without nudity.

I promise to post some newer work soon!

grackle clock

Here’s a pic of the the first grackle clock I did.  This was for the “ValenTimes Day” show.  I didn’t meet the people who bought it, but I hope it’s still keeping them on time…DSC00742

So if you made it out…

If you made it out to the Dallas Nomads show this past Saturday, you already know.  It was huge!  I saw a lot of old6922_1229762337371_1028463060_696171_5531180_n friends and made some new ones.  The free beer and cocktails were a massive hit…although the place was crowded the entire night, the beer line never seemed to dwindle.  I found new homes for a few pieces and I’m glad to see them go to people who really seemed to like them.  All in all it was a lot of fun.  Thanks to all of you who stopped by.  I hope you had as much fun as I did.

6922_1229761057339_1028463060_696162_6684362_n I had camera difficulties the night of the show, but here are a couple from Steve’s celly.  I’ll be uploading some pics of my new artworks in the next few days.

Up next, the skateboard show Nov 7!!!  Already working on my deck, woohoo!!!!

Deep Ellum Fall Gallery Walk / Dallas Nomads Showcase Tonight!

The Dallas Nomads put on some of the best art shows in town.  I’m always impressed by the quality of their events and I always have a blast.  Tonight’s showcase will feature 70 artists and hundreds of works, live music, djs…  I’ve got five new pieces in the show, along with the “Nude Tech” painting posted here below.  I’m looking forward to getting some feedback on the new ones…they are a bit of a new direction for me.

So…if you hate fun, creativity, great art, cool peeps and free drinks, definitely skip this event.  Otherwise, come say hi!

some older work…

ok.  to get the ball rolling, here are some earlier paintings.

Nude Tech

The first is oil on canvas and it was one of those that started with no real direction, and over many sessions and “re-dos” finally became something I like.  In fact, from start to finish, it must have been a few years.  I finished this at the notorious Studio 2304, after dusting it off from a long stint in storage.

water color girl

The next one is one of my few water colors, done last year and never really finished.  But I still think she’s sexy.  You’ll notice the Halo Slurpee cup…no doubt filled with my muse, the Red Lady, aka Red Drank, aka cranberry+vodka <3.

antler portrait

And the last is another water color.  It’s a self portrait…of me wearing a suit…with antlers, which is how i feel the most dapper.

I’ll get some newer stuff up pretty soon.  promise!

wecome to medium heavy!!!

So I decided to join the hundred or so people who have a blog on the internet…behold, Medium Heavy.  What does it mean?  Well, have you ever been totally in the mood to rock out…but not to anything completely bone crushing?  That’s when it’s time for something medium heavy.  That, and I also use many different “media” in my artwork…which is the reason for this site.

It’s embarrassingly empty at the moment, but that just shows how comfortable I am with you.  I know you would never judge me by my lack of blog content.  You may, however, be doubting the artiness of this art blog, since there are currently no pictures of paintings, or really any art at all.  This may lead you to suspect that this is more of a “word” blog.  Although I currently have no proof to the contrary, I promise to upload some soon.  You may notice that I’m sometimes an ok painter, but I seem to be a terrible painting photographer.  So at first, we’ll just go with really bad photos of hopefully decent paintings, and we’ll try to improve on all fronts from there.

There will be updates very soon, but for now I’ll just mention a couple of upcoming events.  This saturday, 9/19/09, is the Dallas Nomad’s massive art show at 2616 Commerce, which is part of the Deep Ellum Art Walk (more info to come).  And November 7th (2 days after my bday, yeehaw!) is the Dallas Nomads 2nd Annual Skateboard Show, which raises money for the Scottish Rite Childrens’ Hospital.

That’s it for now, more soon.  _k
