Artists Healing Japan Fundraiser…this Saturday!

HEY!  GUESS WHAT!?  A ton of Dallas artists are putting on a show where 100% of the proceeds go directly to Japan relief via Unicef and the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth.  Over 200 works of art by 100+ artists will be sold or auctioned while poets, acoustic musicians, bands and djs do their thing!

The event was conceived and organized by a handful of the Just-Us League collaborators.  Allied Stone is the host venue, which is stunning even without the artwork (they have also agreed to donate $1.00 for every person that ‘Likes’ their Facebook page!  CLICK HERE).  Oh, and the incredibly gracious Manasha Garcia, widow of the late Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead, has donated three of his original etchings.

Along with many amazing works by Dallas area artists, two of my recent paintings will be available.  So if you’ve ever thought you would like one of my works, what better time than when the money will go to such a good cause…

“Bounty Hunter”

Acrylic on Canvas

24″X30″

Painted live at the most recent Burning Inspirations show in Ft. Worth.

“More Smiles From Strangers 2″

Acrylic on Canvas

24″X48″

I started this one live at the Deep Ellum Arts Festival this past weekend, in the ArtLoveMagic Artists Alley.  It was about 85% done when my session was up and I finished it here in the studio.

Please come out if you’ve ever liked any of my art, if you enjoy art in general and if you want to help send much needed disaster relief and pick up some great art at the same time.

The second Burning Inspirations was this Saturday…

I had a great time painting and hanging with a bunch of my friends and artist/friends.  I got pretty far into a portrait of Boba Fett.  I even got an offer to buy it when it was just a sketch on the canvas…I hope I didn’t disappoint them when I actually started painting.

Once I finish it, I’ll post a pic.

(belated) UNDERGROUND Recap

Hallway photo by Kelsey Paine - no relation =)

Do you really want an artist who is obsessed with “doing things on time” (big air quotes)?  No.  You want a creative soul driven by reckless abandon.  So here I am, driving this event recap like I stole it, a couple of weeks after the opening.  Look out.

The ArtLoveMagic producers and volunteers had the gallery, the Blue Room and the hallway outside packed with art and artists, and looking rad.  You realize what a great art scene we have when you look around a show like this and see so many of your friends showing and making art.  The crowd was awesome.  There was almost always someone stopping to ask questions about my paintings or just to watch me work.  Although it was packed, there was a cool vibe and people seemed into the art.

It’s safe to say the event exceeded the expectations of everyone involved, as well as everybody who came.  I’ll shut up now, so you can check out the goods.

To the left is an in-process shot of "Year of the Rabbit" that I painted during the show. You can see the source material taped to the wall. On the right is "Voltaic", which people seemed to respond to (who doesn't like sexy girls, right.) -Photo by Schmidty

Another new one, "Futura". -Photo by Schmidty

One of my new "Six Is The New Five" series.

"Voltaic"

"Year of the Rabbit" - This was a charcoal sketch on canvas with a few swipes of spray paint for color blocking when the show began. I got this far between talking to people during the show. I'll post more when it's complete. Oh...the funniest question I got was, "Is that a hamster with a shotgun?" "No, it's a rabbit with an AK47."

"Six is the new Five"

Another "Six is the new Five".

Along with the visual artists, there were bands and djs filling the place with cool music.  In the true spirit of creativity, GOAT headed up the Underground CYPHER.  Basically, 14 of the musicians from the event teamed up to write and record one song…which was then performed live one time ever at the event.  You can check out the viddy below and download the tune HERE.  Awesome.

If you missed the show, all of the art is still on display at the Janette Kennedy Gallery at South Side On Lamar, and will be until Saturday, February 26.  You can also check out a ton of pics of the event and the amazing art in Schmidty’s Flikr gallery HERE.  She also gave me a humorous (i think) name-check in her blog about the show HERE.

There is also a great time lapse video of Dallas artist, Kevin Oberegon, painting live at the event.

UNDERGROUND is here!

I just got home from the set-up for Underground.  The Janette Kennedy Gallery in South Side on Lamar looks dope.  Tons of Dallas’ most amazing artists have already filled the gallery with awesome works of art.

I dropped off three brand new paintings, along with a couple of older works.  And I’ll have quite a few more brand new pieces there Saturday.  All of the artists, including myself, will be creating art live.  So you’ll be able to see me start brand new painting start from scratch.

If you love art, you can’t miss this.  If you are new to art events, this is definitely for you.  Check out the flyer below for all of the madness!

Guerilla Art & Music show was pretty rad…

I admit, I was skeptical with it being a few days before Christmas and on a Wednesday.  But a LOT of people came and everyone had a great time.

Sidenote:  I notice that at the events where I’m painting live, the conversations I get to have about art tend to be more interesting than the ones where you just show your work.  Maybe observing the process breaks down some walls or something.  Whatever it is, I like it.

I also took a few one of a kind, watercolor/stencil prints I did that morning to sell for the cause and sold all of them.  And I heard LIFE in Deep Ellum reached the money goal they were shooting for!

Paula Sanders posted a great review of the show over at Pegasus News.  Check it out HERE and see an in-progress shot of the piece I did.

Thanks to ArtLoveMagic for another great event.

Oh!  And long live Rin Tin Tin!

It’s a strange sensation…

walking up to a new car while shaking a can of spray paint or loading a brush (but you get used to it).

So I painted another Abe Lincoln, along with some red, white, and blue rhinoceros beetles…you know, like you do.

Cody Phillips’ (aka: Mac IX) tire biting snake.

David Rodriguez did a tribute to his ArtLoveMagic co-founder, Michael Lagocki, by painting one of Michael’s characters.

Graffiti by Joe Skills.

Airbrush work by Eddie Walker.

Thanks to Don Herring Mitsubishi and ArtLoveMagic for letting me vandalize a car.

Guerilla Art & Music Benefit For Life In Deep Ellum

This sprung up last minute, but it looks like it’s going to be pretty cool.  I’ll be painting live with some of the other ArtLoveMagic artists.  There will be music (although I don’t think the details are solid yet).  It should be a good time to chill, check out some art and music and raise a little needed cabbage for a great local venue, Life In Deep Ellum.

Since details are still being locked down, the Facebook Event Page is probably the best for latest updates…

When: Wednesday, Dec 22 – 8:30pm – 10:30pm

Where: Life In Deep Ellum: 2803 Taylor St, Dallas, TX 75226, USA (google map)

Come watch me paint a car this Saturday…

And I’m not talking about racing stripes and flames.

This is a first for me and I’m super stoked.  It will probably also be my last art event for a couple of months.  After this I’m locking myself in the studio until Underground in February.

Underground!

I just want to put this on the radar.  It’s one of the two really big shows ArtLoveMagic do each year, and I’m planning to show a LOT of new work.  And of course, all of the artists will be painting live as well.

A link to the Facebook event.  Save the date!

Found some old pics from ArtCon3…

Hello and welcome to two thousand and seven.  ArtCon‘s third and my first.  The last few years, the event has been in an impromptu warehouse/venue just west of downtown Dallas, but ArtCon3 was held at The Door not long after it switched from the Gypsy Ballroom.

I did a multi-layer stencil of Ganesh (my first time at multiple layers).

The separations could have lined up a little better, but I still liked the piece.  It gave me a whole new a appreciation for the artists that do amazing stencil work.

Here’s a picture of Sarah Jane holding it up for auction…

I wish I met whoever bought it.  I think I remember being shy or something.  I’m so cool sometimes.

Art Conspiracy gets better every year I have participated.  It’s definitely one of the funnest Dallas art events all year!

Abe Lincoln: conception/completion

Mr. Lincoln distorted and distressed.  My friend said I should tell people I held up a penny for reference.  But I actually used this…

Source:

(people have commented about the ‘red white & blue’ palette, as well as the ‘blood red’ near the top of his head.  neither were intentional.  maybe I’m dense.  the red was a quick swipe of spray paint, which I often use to quickly block in colors on a new canvas, and it may or may not survive the process.)

(working on two at a time to let the drips dry a little)

Party: Life As Canvas

So I was lucky enough to be part of a really cool event last night, Party: Life As Canvas.  Eventbrite DFW and La Mode Dallas hosted what they called an interactive art party at the Life In Deep Ellum venue, featuring some of the best designers and stylists in dallas, local djs and musicians, as well as live painting and jewelry making supplied by ArtLoveMagic.

Basically, ArtLoveMagic co-founder David Rodriguez, Sarah Fulk, Charles Harrison, Sarah Zamora and I did our respective art thing while, throughout the night, people mingled and danced, a runway fashion show commenced and local musician, Kirk Thurmond, played a live set with his band.  Proceeds went to the local not for profit, Today Marks The Beginning.

Art of the Skateboard 3

No clothes, AK47, Flying V and antlers.  This is our future.  Embrace it.  I titled this one “More Smiles From Strangers”.

The event was super fun with live auctions, djs, tons of people and awesome boards.

Swagg Magazine has a great write up and event pics here.  My board makes a cameo in one of the photos.

Art Conspiracy 6

ArtCon6 was awesome.  Here’s a photo of the paint session.  The piece is a two headed baby with antlers.

The event raised $30, 000 for “Today Marks the Beginning” and fun was had by all.  Check out Artconspiracy.org for more details.
